Outlander season 3: New Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe photos surface

Caitriona Balfe photos

As we await the Outlander season 3 premiere date coming this September, the folks over at Starz are finally starting to lift the veil on some of the fruits of the cast and crew’s labor.

Today, that includes sharing two more photos from the upcoming season, and also the news that the first season 3 teaser will come Sunday prior to the start of The White Princess. We will be the first to admit that this is far earlier than we expected the first teaser to air. With the later start date now in mind, there was a part of us that started to think that we may not get any Outlander footage until we rolled around to the start of Power season 4 in the summer.

The first photo above is one of a couple (official) Caitriona Balfe photos that we’ve seen so far for Outlander season 3, and she is joined here by Tobias Menzies. Claire and Frank are sitting down for what appears to be some sort of showcase, lecture, or performance. They are applauding, and either Claire is experiencing some element of temporary happiness, or she is putting on some sort of brave face out in public. Multiple people on Twitter have pointed out the “class of” marker on the program behind Frank and Claire (which we’re grateful for, close-up vision isn’t always our strong suit), and with that, the prevailing theory has to be that this is Brianna’s graduation.

No matter the setting, this photo serves as an additional sort of insight into her life in Boston, while Frank is still alive and many years before she ventures back through the stones to look for Jamie Fraser once more in the aftermath of Culloden.

As for this second image, meanwhile, it features Sam Heughan’s character on horseback, centuries into the past and sporting a look of a haunted, isolated man. He survived Culloden, but a part of his soul appears gone. Consider this image a prime example of how you can act sometimes with just the smallest parts of your body — like your eyes — and it can alter the entire perspective of a character. There is a sense of emptiness here, or that is at least our personal perspective.

These two photos are both from when the series was filming new episodes in Scotland. Production has since moved on to South Africa, where the Outlander team is filming until early June.

If you do want to secure some additional news regarding Outlander, our simple suggestion is that you do head over to the link here. On Sunday, we will be back with additional analysis on the teaser; there may also be an update or two that comes before then.

Meanwhile, be sure to share some of your thoughts on these two photos now in the attached comments. (Photo: Starz.)
