Is a Prison Break season 6 possible, and is Legends of Tomorrow a factor?

Prison Break

Tonight on Fox, the nine-episode Prison Break season 5 is going to premiere, but we’re going to go ahead and get ahead of ourselves. Why not go ahead and think about the possibility of a Prison Break season 6? That’s the sort of culture we are — always greedy for more.

In theory, the fifth season of the show is not necessarily the end — take, for example, the comments that Dominic Purcell (Lincoln) gave to Entertainment Weekly:

“We all know how successful Prison Break is and what a worldwide phenomenon it is, and these nine episodes are only going to enhance its reputation and appeal … [I] would love to do a season 6.”

However, show executive producer Paul Scheuring is a little less confident, largely because of his concerns that if the show is run into the ground, the storytelling will suffer and the product will become less and less exciting. This is an issue that plagued the original show, where season 4 was controversial at best and went on far longer than it needed to.

We suppose that if the ratings are great and the fan interest is there, it’s something that we could end up seeing transpire at some point down the road. However, we’re not sold on it being something we need beyond just maybe a new season every couple of years.

There’s also the whole Legends of Tomorrow issue to think about, given that Dominic Purcell is a regular over there and Wentworth Miller was technically a regular across the entire CW universe over the past year, even if his appearances were a little more sporadic. We don’t want to see the two actors written off of that show, but if they stay there, it pretty much negates the chances of a Prison Break season 6 next year. They only have so much spare time, and they would have to already be heavy into pre-production for it right now. That’s not happening. It’s a blessing to be this busy, but it can turn out to be rather complicated in terms of planning out a schedule.
