Arrow season 6 spoilers: Katie Cassidy returning as series regular

Katie Cassidy returning

Katie Cassidy is returning to Arrow season 6, and what may be just as intriguing / exciting as this is hearing more about the specific role you’re going to see her play.

The CW confirmed today in a statement that Cassidy will be coming back as a series regular for the upcoming season of the show, but also that she will be returning as Black Siren, the Earth-2 incarnation of Laurel Lance who appeared briefly during the midseason premiere of the show. We’ve also seen her back on The Flash season 2. Here is what showrunner Marc Guggenheim had to say about this decision:

“One of the things that most excites us about Arrow is that we go where the story takes us. Last year, the story took us to the tragic death of Laurel Lance. This year, our midseason finale reintroduced us to Laurel’s doppelgänger, Black Siren. We were so taken by Katie’s fearless interpretation of this character that we knew her story was not yet finished.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Katie back to Arrow as Black Siren, though as her appearances on Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow this season show, she never really left the family.”

As someone who felt as though Cassidy got better and better as Arrow went along before the death of Laurel, this news is exciting, especially if she ends up being either the Big Bad or is associated with her in some way. The thing that we’d wonder if she ever redeemed herself was what this news means for Dinah Drake, given that we’ve already met the show’s new version of the Black Canary and seen her stick around for most of the season.

You will be seeing Cassidy appear on at least one more episode of Legends of Tomorrow this season as the original Earth-1 Laurel Lance — she, like Wentworth Miller and John Barrowman, signed contracts before the season that allowed them to be “regulars” across the entire universe. We’re still confused as to what this meant, given that none of them had an enormous presence on any of the shows. Barrowman was probably spotted the most, but his appearances outside of Legends have been sporadic, to put it mildly.

This announcement is what was teased previously by Guggenheim before the weekend; unfortunately, this may invalidate our hope that Slade Wilson could be coming back at the end of the season.
