Madam Secretary season 3 episode 16: Dalai Lama drama

Madam Secretary season 3 episode 16

You have to love the serendipitous timing for Madam Secretary season 3 episode 16. When the show was planning next week’s “Swept Away,” they had no advance knowledge that people were going to be looking at the relationship between China and the Dalai Lama.

However, last week’s edition of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver ironically featured a segment all about the Tibetan spiritual leader, who is a controversial figure in much of China. You can read up about that over here, but the basic sentiment here is that this is a man who, in the eyes of many Chinese official, is a scourge that they cannot control that leads to great unrest throughout Tibet. The statistics of deaths and other affronts to human rights are staggering, and the last thing that the Chinese may want is for another international official to rally behind the Dalai Lama in any form.

In this fictional world, this is where we enter Elizabeth McCord. She decides to meet with him (after all, he is revered in many parts of the world beyond China), and the aftereffects of this said meeting could be vast.

Synopsis – “Elizabeth’s landmark global climate treaty with more than 200 countries is jeopardized when China threatens to back out due to her meeting with an ailing Dalai Lama. Also, Henry worries about his undercover operative’s safety, and Jay is surprised when Abby serves him with a custody agreement for their daughter.”

Aside from the Elizabeth / Dalai Lama storyline (which really is from our vantage point the main event here), what we’re most intrigued about is seeing just how bad things could get for Jay before they start to get a little bit better. Admittedly, we feel for him greatly since you don’t want to see someone in his position suffer. Yet, it is his actions with work that have brought him to this place, and you have to wonder if there was a reason why he thought he could really have everything, the world as his oyster in terms f his job and also his family. There are personal ramifications that come with not spending the amount of time with your loved ones, and he’s feeling that now.
