Should Sara Lance on Legends of Tomorrow season 2 get a recurring love interest?

Sara -

Mrs Carter: Legends of Tomorrow and romance just don’t mix … for now.

We really want to root for romance to happen on this show — the Mrs. Carter column is about romance, after all! Unfortunately, that’s just not something that’s come together properly. The season 1 romance with Ray Palmer and Kendra Saunders fell flat, leaving Kendra to leave with someone in Carter Hall who, in spite of their history and whatnot, really spent a lot of time being a heel. This time around, we’re seeing an effort made with the relationship between Amaya and Nate Heywood, but it’s not quite working just yet. Part of the problem is that it came almost out of nowhere, and we were actually more interested in the idea of Mick Rory and Amaya together … mostly to see what that’s like for Mick.

Now, let’s focus in more on Sara. She’s such an interesting character in that she’s not altogether reflective of the past. You don’t see her spending much time thinking about her time with the League of Assassins, her relationship with Oliver queen, or some of the time that she had with Nyssa. She keeps her feelings close to the vest. Yet, Caity Lotz is unquestionable the lead of the show now. The CW promotes it with her front and center, and she’s the Captain of the Waverider. Is it time that she finally receive a more consistent love interest of her own?

Sara’s certainly had her moments here and there. She had her relationship with a nurse back in the first season, but it was always clear that this wasn’t going to work given the time-travel component of the show. It was tricky for her to bring someone to the future whose purpose was still in the past. Then, there were a few minutes of Captain Canary between her and Snart at the end of the first season, but then Snart died. This may have been the shortest romantic ‘ship of all time, given that it soared and immediately burned. Sad really.

This season, we’ve seen dalliances, but they’ve been of the one-and-done variety. Is this the show choosing to make Sara a little roguish and free? Sure, and we’re all for that, but we do like the opportunity of having someone on the show that makes her vulnerable and question her humanity beyond the team.

There are also no shortage of options both in terms of guest stars or familiar characters. There are so few other bisexual characters within the universe that it makes sense to explore these angles and see if there is someone out there who could work for her.

So why isn’t it being explored now?

The biggest reason seems to be a lack of obvious candidates. There’s a sibling relationship between her and Ray, and we can’t see her and Rory going there after she kissed his former partner. Then, Nate’s currently occupied and there doesn’t seem to be the right sort of chemistry with Jax. Obviously, she hates the Legion of Doom.

For the third season, the show probably will need to consider adding a new character to give Sara some more consistent romance, or find a way to bring back someone like Katrina Law. (We don’t really want to go too much into her potential availability here out of respect for her late Training Day co-star Bill Paxton.) Beyond Nyssa, we actually think that the best person for her among the current group would be someone like Winn on Supergirl given that he’s such the opposite of her in every way … though the writers of that show were clearly thinking that already with Lyra.

Do you think that Legends of Tomorrow should explore more romance for Sara, or are they better off keeping their eyes on the prize — with that being the Spear of Destiny? Share in the comments! (Photo: The CW.)
