What does ‘Agents of SHIELD’ need to do to secure season 5 renewal?

SHIELD -Last night, Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” brought to the table the end of its LMD arc with, interestingly, an episode that didn’t really resolve much of anything. There were far more questions than answers by the time we rolled around to the closing minutes of it, especially when you started to think a little bit more about the Framework, and the roles that so many people are going to have there.

Also, Grant Ward is back! Maybe there are some people out there unhappy about this, while there are some other people who are thrilled. Oh, the life of having one of the most polarizing characters on television at the moment.

We know that the show is on the bubble, and it’s not clear precisely what it will take in order for it to be officially saved. With this in mind, we thought that one of the main focuses of this article is going to be trying to determine what the show needs to do in order to give it a better shot at earning a fifth — and potentially final — season on the air. (The only alternative seems to be having season 4 be the last one, so let’s not get too greedy here at the moment.

1. Get the ratings up – This seems to be a no-brainer, but we’d say that the show will likely need to boost itself up to at the very least a 0.7 or a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic over the final weeks in order to have a great chance. We don’t think this is an impossible feat, given that the average for season 4 to date is somewhere in between there; however, the problem is that over the past few weeks, we haven’t seen the numbers improve beyond a 0.6 rating except for only on two occasions.

2. Get some marquee returns – Is there a way to get another appearance from a Bobbi Morse or a Lance Hunter? Can you get Blair Underwood back from “Quantico”? Part of the fun with the Framework is that theoretically, almost anyone from the show’s history could return. You need to generate some buzz in some interesting ways.

3. Potentially talk “Inhumans” or the Royal Family – We know that the upcoming series slated for the new season is not being thought of as a “SHIELD” spin-off at all. However, there are some obvious connections between the two, and it would benefit the show to establish at the very least a loose thread or two in order to make a crossover theoretically possible.
