‘This Is Us’ episode 16 preview: On Randall, William’s emotional trip to Memphis

Randall -We haven’t even seen a second of Tuesday night’s new episode of “This Is Us” yet, and the song “Walking in Memphis” is already starting to play in our head. This is going to be arguably the biggest story of the season for the characters of William and Randall, as the two will spend the majority of the episode (if not all of) embarking on a journey together to the Tennessee city.

The focus of the episode is fairly simple: A way to see a little bit more of the relationship between these two men play out as they explore some of William’s family history and Randall’s biological background. Given that William’s health is ailing, this may be one of their last opportunities to do something like this and they are meant to take advantage of almost every moment that they have. Unfortunately, there is still that fear and that possibility that these moments could be their last.

In previewing how the episode came together, and precisely how authentic it actually is, show creator Dan Fogelman stated the following to Entertainment Weekly:

“It’s one of those special hours of television, which is a little road trip movie between these two characters as their relationship grows … It’s a real going-home story. It feels like a real love letter to Memphis and a real love letter to William and his story … It’s not just Randall and William walking around a back lot at Paramount talking about being in Memphis. They’re actually in Memphis and eating Memphis barbecue and going to Memphis clubs and hotels. It’s got a real authentic vibe to it.”

Yes, it is very-much true now that we want Memphis barbecue, and to become an extension of this particular world, as well. This is a show that loves to pull at the heartstrings, and as a result of this, we could see one of the most emotional episodes of the entire season, really regardless of how it all ends up coming to a close.
