‘The Walking Dead’ season 7, episode 10: Norman Reedus on controversial Daryl decision

Walking DeadLast night on AMC, the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” presented a moment that we know so many people out there were looking to see: Daryl and Carol finally reunited after a seriously long apart! They had a chance to share a sweet scene together after he paid her a visit, and this was of course after he got into it with Richard after he proposed using her as a sacrificial lamb in his quest to get The Kingdom further involved in the battle against Negan.

As sweet as the moment was between the two characters (we speculated last night about the romantic implications that could have been there), you could still understandably ponder over a few other questions. For example, why did Daryl lie and make it sound like everyone was okay? You know that she’s going to find out later that this isn’t the case, and she’s not the sort of person who needs to be protected from the truth. Yet, as Norman Reedus explained to Entertainment Weekly, much of this for his character was about protecting her from herself:

“[He said that because] she needs to hear that. She’s going through her own thing and there’s a reason why she separated herself and doesn’t want to be a killer anymore. And she’s losing herself, and I think Daryl realizes that. It’s a very selfless act. He tells her what she needs to hear to keep going. He does it for her.”

This is an interesting debate that fans can continue having for a rather long time, mostly because there’s no clear differentiation between right and wrong here. Inherently, it’s never a good thing to lie, but it wasn’t a mean-spirited lie and Daryl may think that down the road, she is better equipped to hear it and deal with it. This is just the sort of thing that Daryl may need to reflect on after the fact in order to understand it better. It can be challenging sometimes in the moment to determine the right thing to do, and with that, it could be easier to resolve this situation with a passage of time.

What do you think about Reedus’ take? Was Daryl right to lie to Carol about happened? Let us know in the comments, and you can also head over here if you are curious to secure some additional news when it comes to “The Walking Dead” right now! (Photo: AMC.)
