Why Miranda Hart was absent from ‘Call the Midwife’ season 6

There was a great deal of mystery surrounding Miranda Hart’s exit from “Call the Midwife” prior to her plans to appear on the current sixth season of the show. Now, some things are starting to be made a little bit more clear.

According to The Sun, Hart disclosed while at a comedy gig earlier this week that she was battling a mystery illness last year that left her unfit to exercise — more than likely, this is what impeded her ability to be a part of the show, and what forced creator Heidi Thomas to do some last-minute rewrites so that the rest of the show could move forward without a significant Chummy story. (For the record, there doesn’t seem to be any ill will at all between Hart or some of the people on the show — all indications are that she is being invited back to the series whenever she wants to be there.)

Hart’s rep also told the publication that she is doing fine and actively working now.

Absolutely, we do want to see more of Miranda on the show — she’s incredibly funny, and her talent brings a welcome new dimension to the proceedings on this show that isn’t there without her. Also, it’s just nice to have some representation of the earlier seasons of the show. Remember for a minute or two here that we don’t have Jessica Raine on the show anymore, and last season we also lost Sister Evangelina as a character. Patsy Mount’s been increasingly important to the story over the years, but even she’s gone for the time being and we’re left to wonder precisely what is going on with her return. We do think that she’ll be back eventually, but we’re in an impatient culture! Therefore, you cannot be TOO shocked that we, just like so many others, want to see her back as soon as humanly possible.
