‘Timeless’ finale: Show exec on finale, season 2 plans

Timeless -With the finale of “Timeless” coming on NBC Monday night, there are many questions floating around in the mystical TV ether. Here are two of the better ones — how will the season end, and will there be a huge cliffhanger that makes a second season necessary? The latter move is a great way to dare the network to give you a renewal, but there comes a major problem is you’re canceled: You run the risk of angering many of your fans, who may not appreciate the lack of resolution.

Luckily, it DOES feel as though there is going to be an ending to this story. For a little more on that subject, here is what executive producer Shawn Ryan had to say to TVLine:

“…I think there are a lot of reasons for optimism for a Season 2. We’ll find out in two or three months. We’ve always set out to tell this one-season story that then would provide a launching point for a Season 2, but that would answer a lot of things, and I think we did it. We didn’t have any conversations where we were pulling out ratings and trying to do the math. We’re just writers, and we told the best story we could. So we’ll let the chips fall where they may.”

In the end, there’s going to be some closure on the story of this season — the Garcia Flynn story’s been a great one for the entirety of the year, but there was only so much of seeing him move along through time that we were going to be able to end up seeing before it started to get flat. You don’t have to kill Flynn off, but finding another use for him can work! That has to be one of the core values of the show — continuing to mix things up and do things that are fun and exciting.

Now, we just hope that we get a chance to see that happen. For the record, we’re going to have an interview of our own published prior to the finale with Malcolm Barrett (Rufus), one where he reflects a little on his own journey this season and what he thinks the show’s future chances are.
