‘Doctor Who’ season 11: Mark Gatiss talks female Doctor possibility

Doctor Who -Consider Mark Gatiss to be yet another person in the camp of bringing a female star to “Doctor Who” for a potential eleventh season of the show. It’s still not entirely clear if such a season will happen, but this is an idea that he would be very much open to seeing if it ever came on the air.

The thing to remember here, though, is that it’s not necessarily like Gatiss has all that much control on the future of The Doctor character in the first place. He’s a writer on the series occasionally, but this is the brainchild at present of his “Sherlock” co-creator Steven Moffat. Meanwhile, even if he did have more of a say, it wouldn’t matter given that Moffat is leaving the show at the end of the season. As he told Simon Mayo on the BBC Radio 2 show “Drivetime,” we’ll just have to see a wait-and-see approach with this one:

“I think it’d be really good for the show … It’s been back for 12 years, which means it’s not the new kid on the block anymore; it’s not a revival, it’s been back for a long time.

“It’s the sort of thing I think would bring an amazing new audience to it. I think it’d be fantastic. But who knows, it’s up to [incoming showrunner] Chris Chibnall.”

Our feeling on this is virtually the same as it’s been ever since Matt Smith announced he was leaving — hire the person who inspires you the most. It doesn’t quite matter if it is a man or a woman; you just want the best story possible featuring the person best equipped to play the role. We just hope that Chibnall looks at a wide array of people, and finds the right person accordingly. The challenge over the coming months will likely be hearing the 100 or so bogus rumors that are going to come out about the part. This happens every time, and British publications know that Doctor rumors are a way to generate some easy traffic.
