‘NCIS: New Orleans’ season 3, episode 13 review: Hacker kills to expose prominent secrets; Tom Arnold returns

On Tuesday night viewers of “NCIS: New Orleans” got a chance to see Agent Pride’s team hunt down a killer who stole classified government files. It was an extreme case that NCIS needed to figure out, as four people were gunned down and thousands of government classified documents were taken. These documents were, in most part, ongoing investigations and were deemed to be extremely sensitive. The most scandalous images were released to the public to embarrass prominent individuals in New Orleans, which caused even more chaos. The NCIS team quickly learns that the hackers they are looking for are slippery individuals who don’t want to be found and their real intentions are less than honorable.

Focusing on the case, the team stumbles upon a familiar character, Elvis Bertrand (played by Tom Arnold). Realizing he can help the team find the hacker with his mad computer skills, the killer was uncovered but found too late as he was dead on a boat. Going a step further, the accomplice to the killer appears to be the real reason of the exposed prominent secrets were unearthed. Looking for a particular individual, it was a cover to throw off authorities to find more information. The stolen documents and hacking gave the viewers a real delight watching the show. The exploding computers, the old negative emails and all the uncertainties had the agents on edge during the chase.

It was a break in the case by Elvis Bertrand that gave the team a solid lead. After determining that a member of a gang was looking for a relative scooped up by the CIA, the team was pointed to a retired agent who knew the location of the individual. In a race against time, NCIS agents confront the killer, but end up shooting him as he seems to be trigger happy. As they barely arrive in time, the agent appears to be badly beaten, but still alive. In the end the remaining secret documents were recovered and were not shared with the public (which didn’t help the New Orleans mayor, but he took his already released images in stride).

Viewers of “NCIS: New Orleans” got to see Sebastian Lund in a new light. He joins the team as a newly minted NCIS Special Agent and his first case had him get beat up by a criminal and perhaps a bit too eager on the first day. Ready to take down the bad guys, he is already struggling between being an NCIS agent and falling back on his previous role of forensics agent.

As the episode played out, the agents seemed to have a test of their own offered up. Looking to create a distraction, volumes of negative comments were sent to other co-workers in an attempt to turn the team against each other. While there was a bit of hostility, it was a temporary situation that actually strengthened their relationships (especially after a few apologies)

We were thrilled to see Tom Arnold once again on “NCIS: New Orleans.” He fits into the role of a sly, but kind soul trying to make his way (without being seen) and always seems to cater to Agent Pride’s softer side. We hope Arnold continues to make sporadic visits to the show as he offers up plenty of mystery (and plenty of drama.) Episode grade: A.
