‘Outlander’ season 3: On (possible) summer premiere, South Africa talk
While “Outlander” may be done shooting some exterior scenes in Scotland for the third season, that hardly means that we’re at the end of the road with production! That is what this particular article all about — charting a path forward to where filming for the rest of the season could go.
First, we should acknowledge that there is some interior filming still taking place in Edinburgh for the third season between now and February 8. We don’t like to give away further location information on this sort of thing for two simple reasons: It can make things harder for production when people know where they are (and show up to watch the action), and we don’t want to lead anyone into believing that a certain cast member or two will be present there when they’re not. We don’t know who is filming; all we can say for certain is that there is some work going on in the Scottish city for most of the next week.
South Africa production talk – You already know that this is most likely happening, and that the country is doubling for Jamaica, a prominent location in the third book Voyager. When will the cast be heading there? Odds are, not until March. Remember that Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have an appearance at Emerald City Comic-Con early next month, and it’s hard to envision the two of them flying from Scotland down to South Africa, and then going back to the other side of the world in Seattle before going back again. They likely booked the convention knowing when some of the production dates are; otherwise, they’d be taking a 4-5 day break in the middle of production to go.
We do know courtesy of an old interview featuring Sam and Harper’s Bazaar that filming in South Africa will continue until late May, so he and Caitriona will be working there for some time.
Premiere Speculation – After previously hoping that season 3 could begin in April (as did season 2 and season 1A), there are more and more signs pointing towards the summer as the logical start time for the show. First, you have the continued discussion that Bryan Fuller’s “American Gods” will premiere this spring. Meanwhile, from there you have the logistics of having to turn around footage that is filmed in spring to air in the spring and that timeline is tight. They could potentially try for a split season, but that’s a little tricky with only thirteen episodes and doesn’t allow for much in the way of momentum.
Finally, it’s been mentioned in a new Interview Magazine piece featuring Tobias Menzies that the third season is premiering this summer. That’s not confirmed by Starz, but this is a trusted source and the timing makes the most sense given what the show has to do.
Let us know what you think about the show potentially premiering in the summer by sharing a comment! Meanwhile, be sure to head over here if you do want to take a look at some other news and features regarding “Outlander.” (Photo: Starz.)

I would also think that filming in South Africa means some concern for weather conditions…which may be why the later filming.

They said “earlier than we expect”, back when people were talking about season 3 not being released for like 2 years or fall 2017 at the earliest. They never said “earlier than season 1 and 2.” I’d rather them take their time and do better than season 2’s mess, anyway.

Well, if they do delay it until Summer I’m going to be peeved. They shouldn’t have promised last summer that we would get the show back earlier. I don’t give a damn about ‘American Gods,’ I want to see Outlander.

I agree Progressive_Pagan this is taking way to long to return and the promised that season 3 would premiere earlier then season 1 and 2, but I knew something was off because we haven’t seen any pictures of the young Willie/William Jamie’s son. I don’t think he has been cast yet!!

They have already filmed Helwater episodes back in November, I think. Maril Davis was alluding to filming a scene between Jamie and Willie in one of her twits back then. Geneva and Isobel’s casting was announced also a couple of months ago.

I saw pictures of Geneva and Isobel just haven’t seen anything about Willie/William and was curious

There was never a promise that it would return earlier than 1 and 2. All that was said was “earlier than expected,” back when 2018 was expected.

“American Gods” is also based on a bestselling book, pretty much like “Outlander”, so I’m sure many people wait for this adaptation even if you don’t.
And I’m sorry but such feet stomping is petty. They have barely started filming block 5 and have only 8 episodes filmed out of 13 so far, plus there is still much post-production to be done. If they are not ready, then they are not ready.

I’ve had a feeling the premier would be later than April, but summer is not as bad as autumn. With all the filming they have left it only makes sense. Not that I like it, but I understand it. I’d rather they took a little more time anyway because if you rush through it we wouldn’t have the high quality production we’ve come to expect and which they so willingly continue to give us.

OMG!!! We all had our hearts set on April for Season 3 and now it could be pushed back until the summer. That is very disappointing. This show has such a massive following and I feel it is very unfair to the fans. Why so long between seasons, it is ridiculous. There is such garbage on tv and we are meant to wait and wait and wait for the quality shows. It really is annoying.

They take 10 months to film a season that is the equivalent of 6 06 7 major movies. The cast and crew work 16 hour days through the cold, wet and snow of winter and you b*tch because its disappointing the fans! How much more do you expect of them Maureen Turner? It seems to me that you are the one who is ridiculous and unfair.

Jayne Coleman you shouldn’t attack anyone for feeling disappointed!!! It is a disappointment after being promised by Ron Moore and other directors that season 3 would premiere earlier then season 2!! We as fans don’t want to see Sam and Caitriona or the other actors over worked or suffer in anyway. As fans we love and respect them but Ron and Starz should make a statement to viewers of Outlander instead of keeping it quite that filming is delayed. We understand that crap happens, just tell us!!

But when did Ron Moore or any other director promised – and I mean, really promised – that season 3 would premiere earlier then season 2? How would that even be possible? They started filming season 2 in May so they managed to finish for the show to air in April. They started filming season 3 by the end of August, so 3 months later. I’ve never bought the ealier premiere, it’s impossible.

Sara Ron Moore, Anne Kennedy and Muriel Davies I think that how you spell Muriels name. All said in various interviews over in the past that season 3 would premiere earlier then season 2. Just because you didn’t read the interviews doesn’t mean they didn’t say it. Why are you people so hostile!! No one said they “Promised” they repeated what was said in there interviews. Calm down!! It’s Ok Most Fans understand delays and are just voicing there disappointment!! I don’t think this is a crime!!

I’m not hostile, I’m calm – I’m not using exlamation marks in my post unlike people who complain here about the delay in filming. I only asked a simple question. I read interviews, I just don’t remeber anyone “promising” an ealier premiere (that’s why I asked) and “promise” is a word you used in your previous message, stating than fans were “promised” an ealier premiere by Ron Moore.
But you are right, this discussion is pointless. Season 3 will air when it will air, some fans will wait patiently, other not so much.

There was a lot of speculation at the end of S2 that we wouldn’t get S3 until 2018 because shooting was going to begin late. I believe the statement was “earlier than you think,” but no promises were ever made. If anyone can find a link where someone promised April, I’ll eat my hat.
Put your money on an August premiere. There are trailers out for “American Gods” and “The White Princess,” so I’m confident those and “Power” will air before Outlander.

I’d really like Outlander season 3 to air in April because It’s still Winter and I’m in the house and ready to watch some serious TV. But if Outlander doesn’t air until June or July then I stand a chance of missing an episode because I’m not home in the Summer. But if that is the only time that Outlander can air on TV then I guess I’ll have to make exceptions. Regardless, cast and crew of Outlander keep up the great work. Us fans know you are really trying to make an awesome season 3 for us and we appreciate it.
