‘Doctor Who’ season 11: Hayley Atwell, Zachary Levi, Idris Elba top personal list of 13th Doctor favorites
Today, the news was first revealed that we’re going to see Peter Capaldi depart “Doctor Who” at the end of the upcoming tenth season and the Christmas Special to follow — and of course, that has us looking towards the future! While there will certainly be a significant amount of time moving forward to discuss this further, we wanted over the course of this article to lay out our earliest picks for who we’d want to see in the part moving forward.
Of course, in coming up with this we’re trying to be moderately realistic, though at the same time we know that recent traditional has been to shy away from big-name candidates for the role. These are just people who could make for fun inclusions if we were in the casting director role.
Martin Freeman – While we wait for more “Sherlock,” wouldn’t the former “Hobbit” and “Office” UK star be great as Thirteen? He has the comedy chops, but we wonder if he’d want to balance this and a potential fifth season of the show down the road. Also, with Steven Moffat leaving later this year that connection is no longer anywhere near as important.
Hayley Atwell – She’s expressed interest in the past, and with “Conviction” likely ending, it feels like the former “Agent Carter” star could be available for the part. Also, she’d be an incredible Doctor given her humor and capacity to kick butt onscreen.
Idris Elba – How about the former “Luther” star? He certainly is a busy guy, but there’s no doubt to us that he would be really fun and bring a strong, commanding presence to the show and the role. (Honestly, we just want to see Elba in EVERYTHING.)
Zachary Levi – If you’re looking at American actors, the former star of “Chuck” absolutely has a great resume for the part. He’s very funny, is used to doing action scenes, and as a San Diego Comic-Con staple knows geek culture really well. Maybe we’re a tad biased given that “Chuck” remains one of our favorite TV shows of all time.
Helen Mirren – It’s incredibly unlikely, but Capaldi himself already said that he’d like to see it. The best hope for Helen is that you could get her to do a one-off someday, which is something we could see her being a tad more interested in doing.
