‘The Walking Dead’: Could Sonequa Martin-Green do season 8 and ‘Star Trek: Discovery’?

twdThe eighth season of “The Walking Dead” is not premiering for a rather long time on AMC, but we like to think that it’s never too early to start to wonder whether or not we are going to be seeing the show come back on the air with new episodes. The same goes for whether or not we are going to be seeing Sonequa Martin-Green return as the character of Sasha.

The truth here is that, simply, her return is rather complicated. After all, Martin-Green is set to topline the new “Star Trek: Discovery” whenever it comes on CBS All Access (that is still not entirely clear), and her ability to be a part of the AMC drama moving forward is something that could vary significantly depending on everything from scheduling to what the story dictates on the zombie drama. If Sasha is killed off, then obviously there’s not that much more story to tell with her here. We’ve seen via Heath (Corey Hawkins) that the show can balance an actor finding some other work and continuing to be a part of this universe — even if, to be fair, we’ve only seen some brief and isolated shots of Heath at this point in the run.

For the time being, “The Walking Dead” seems to be keeping their options open, or at the very least that is what they’re trying to project. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Scott M. Gimple had the following to say:

“Sonequa Martin-Green can do anything … I’ve seen her battle a horde of walkers this year while simultaneously battling a stomach flu that would have had most people crying in the dirt. She can fulfill the duties of a Lieutenant Commander on a Constitution-class starship whilst battling walkers, Saviors, and whatever gets in Sasha’s way.  We’ve had to juggle before. I will certainly juggle for Star Trek any day of the week. Okay, maybe not on Sunday.”

We will probably know more about Sasha’s future on “The Walking Dead” by the end of season 7, and even if she does leave, it’s easy to praise the work that she’s done here. On a meta level, one thing that’s been really fun for us is watching Martin-Green’s rise from a recurring player to a series lead. We remember first getting to know her as Tamara at the end of “Once Upon a Time” season 2, and she’s since become a regular on the zombie drama and will now topline “Discovery” in the future.
