Does ‘American Horror Story’ really need a crossover season?

Roanoke -

There are officially three more seasons of “American Horror Story” coming to FX, and there already are a ton of ideas for them floating around the internet. We’ve heard about a super-secret one being written by someone who is not executive producer Ryan Murphy, just as we’ve also heard about one that is set to feature crossovers between the first season “Murder House” and the third season “Coven.” Neither one of these ideas is meant to be the upcoming seventh season, which there is already a concrete idea for. All that is known for sure about this one is that it is going to feature the return of Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters.

For the sake of this article, we are speaking mostly about the crossover idea, mostly through the lens of what Murphy said about it in a new Entertainment Weekly cover story:

“It’s a character from season 1 that will be thrust into the world that you are left with at the end of Coven, which is sort of like the male/female/witch academy … And then all of those characters will intertwine, which is confusing because some of them are from seasons 1 and 3. Like, Sarah Paulson will probably be playing 18 characters.”

The line about Paulson is legitimately funny, but beyond that, is the idea for this season anything other than nebulous? It sounds like we’re just throwing a bunch of characters in a cauldron and hoping that the end result isn’t terrible. The first season of the show was great, but there is a question as to whether you want to do much to tamper with that. Also, the third season of the show’s already been messed with somewhat, given that Gabourey Sidibe’s character of Queenie was killed off over on “American Horror Story: Hotel” after a brief appearance. Does this mean that we’re going to have to get some “Hotel” in here too? If that’s the case, we really want to run away from this idea as quickly as possible.

“American Horror Story” seasons are great when they are their own thing, but you get little Easter eggs here and there of the surrounding universe. The best example of it working right was Pepper in two different seasons — “Orphans” may be one of the best episodes of the entire series. Still, that was just one small storyline in a larger season.

What’s your take on the whole crossover concept? Is it something that we could do without in your mind? Share some of your thoughts on the subject below! Meanwhile, head over here to get some further news when it comes to the series now. (Photo: FX.)
