‘Scorpion’ season 3, episode 13 preview: Can Paige’s mom help in debate prep?

Scorpion -After a brief break, “Scorpion” season 3 is returning to CBS on Monday night — and judging from the sneak peeks below, there’s going to be a good bit of fun to be had — but also at the same time a generous dose of frustration.

In the two sneak peeks below, the breaking news is that Paige’s mother Veronica is back in town! As a longtime fan of Lea Thompson’s, there’s pretty much no way to be upset about this. Here’s the issue: When she left, she basically bolted out of town, and nobody heard from her for weeks. We now have a better sense as to precisely why that was: She got a business deal that commanded all of her attention immediately. She understands that this particular move probably made her daughter incredibly upset, and that is something you get a little bit more insight into in the second preview.

There is some good stuff in that particular clip about the case of the week, which apparently is going to involve A) wine and B) people getting drugged. Seeing Cabe completely miss the mark on pouring out wine is hysterical.

In going back to the first preview for a minute, though, you get a sense as to why Veronica is a fun addition to the team whenever she is around: She has an ability to manipulate and argue a specific point of view that everyone else lacks. These people may be geniuses, but they’re not liars and not used to having to go that route to get their way. While lying per se isn’t a great skill for an alderman to have (at least if we’re being idealistic), Toby recognizes that Veronica may be useful for debate prep simply because she knows how to make good, pointed arguments and worm her way out of tough situations. Hopefully, we get to see the results of alderman election soon, and that there will be some more chances to see Thompson beyond just this episode. She has another show in “Switched at Birth” coming up, but it actually finished filming well before she ever appeared on “Scorpion.”
