Donald Trump spokesman attacks ‘Saturday Night Live’ – Alec Baldwin portrayal

Trump -Even though Donald Trump has remained fairly quiet on the subject of this past weekend’s “Saturday Night Live,” someone associated with the candidate still found a way to chime in with some thoughts. Specifically, we’re talking here about Sean Spicer, the soon-to-be press secretary who serves right now as a spokesman.

Appearing on the Fox News “MediaBuzz” program, Spicer told Howard Kurtz that he found the cold open sketch from this weekend’s show (watch here) — which featured Alec Baldwin as the President-elect making commentary about the infamous Russian intelligence allegations — “not funny” and also a “hit piece” designed by left-wing comedians. (We think that “satire” may be the word he’s looking for here, no?) From there, he then echoes a sentiment that about 75% of the internet utters at one point or another: The was funny at one point, but isn’t funny now!

Maybe there is a certain amount of truth to this particular claim from Spicer. We do find that for many, “SNL” is often the funniest when you first watch it, just because you form an emotional connection to that era and the people who are on the show … but we also don’t think that Spicer is secretly some sort of show historian. He’s more speaking in the moment against an institution mocking a person who is bringing him into his administration in an incredibly important role.

Ultimately, we do find most of the Baldwin stuff funny, mostly because it’s a comedy show. We also found it funny when they mocked Bill Clinton. We didn’t when Barack Obama was skewered, mostly because of the fact that he wasn’t an easy person to poke fun of given his personality was a little more even-keel. It’s easy to figure out why Trump supporters and his administration would be upset, but if we were them, our advice would be simple: Ignore “SNL.” All you are doing is further fueling their fire, and adding to their significance as a pop-culture institution.

What do you think about Spicer’s comments, and should Trump and all of his administration just ignore the show from now on? Share in the comments, and head over here to read our full review of this weekend’s new episode. (Photo: NBC.)
