‘Saturday Night Live’: First Felicity Jones promo brings in the Stormtroopers

SNL -

After the holiday hiatus, this weekend marks the return of “Saturday Night Live” with new episodes! There’s a tremendous amount to celebrate when it comes to this, just as there is also a great deal to celebrate when it comes to the host in Felicity Jones. The star of “Rogue One: A Star Wars” story is going to be hosting the show this weekend, while Sturgill Simpson is serving as the musical guest for the occasion.

Judging from this first promo below, it seems as though Jones is going to have zero problem making fun of herself — or making fun of the “Star Wars” franchise, either (which usually makes for a good show). She specifically has a good time with some of the Stormtroopers who don’t seem to appreciate a particularly terrible pun. This promo is short and sweet, but to the point: What NBC really wants you to know is that they’ve got a host with ties to the “Star Wars” universe, and the inevitable Donald Trump parodies are probably going to do enough to convince people to watch.

As for whether or not Jones will be good a host, for now we’re optimistic. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” star Adam Driver was certainly capable when he took on the gig last year at around this time, and this could be one of those situations where almost everything is dependent on the quality of the writing. If they give Jones some excellent material to work with, she’ll thrive; our preference is to give her one or two sketches related to her performing career, but then let her stretch her wings a little bit and take on a wide array of other things, as well. Basically, allow her to have as many different opportunities to shine as possible.

Meanwhile, our expectations are less for Simpson given that we’re not all too familiar with his music. What we do know is that he is incredibly versatile, and he’s able to do a little bit of everything from country to blues to rock. This should help make for an interesting show.

What do you think of this promo, and are you excited to see what Jones is going to be bringing to the table this weekend? Share your thoughts below, and head over here in the event you want some other news related to the series. (Photo: NBC.)
