‘Hawaii Five-0’ season 7, episode 13 review: Max’s exit leaves us in tears
There are mainland police officers coming to Hawaii for a conference… what is essentially known as “Spring Break for cops” and with that we had a cameo from Willie Garson as Hirsch! He was helping (sort of) with the case of the week by helping catch a person of interest for Steve – by crashing his brand new truck. He just can’t catch a break when it comes to vehicles this year. Wonder what Steve’s insurance premiums will look like after this?
With Max leaving we learned that he has been keeping a daily journal since he was 8 years old and there a boxes of these journals much to Jerry’s delight. The more Jerry reads, the more he learns some very interesting things about Max… like that Steve once broke into his house one time to stay there when he was a fugitive. Max tells Jerry that was a game changer for their relationship, because that was the day that he realized that Steve trusted him as more then a colleague – they had a friendship too. We also saw how Max ended up asking Sabrina out that first time after getting advice from Kono to just go for it. As the memories pour our, Jerry encourages Max to tells the team just what everyone means to him before he heads out, instead of just keeping his feelings locked up in journals.
At Max’s farewell party, he takes Jerry’s advice and during his farewell speech he did a beautiful job of telling everyone how he feels as well as making us cry like a baby. We are really going to miss Max, he’s such a fun part of the show. Having a few flashbacks to moments in Max’s life was a lovely way to say goodbye to him after being part of the “Hawaii Five-0” family for so long.
While there were definitely some tears tonight over losing Max (and Masi Oka), there were also so many really fun moments with the number one being Danny getting a face full of whipped cream over and over while playing a game appropriately called “Pie Face”. We also can’t say enough how much we loved the conversation between Lou and Steve about how to properly enjoy their homegrown coffee and donuts. It felt like a conversation we’ve had at the CarterMatt offices quite a few times over the years, and Lou is not wrong about a donut only being dunked once, because the double dunk will lead to pieces of donut sinking to the bottom of your cup in a miserable little soggy lump. Episode grade: A-

It was nice to see her back this season, even if it was for just one episode.

My favorite Max episode will always be 2.1 when he aided McGarrett after his escape. He proved himself worthy of trust.

I am really going to miss Max. Wish the show had been using him more the past few seasons.
