Golden Globes 2017: Donald Trump predictably goes in on Meryl Streep speech
If there is one thing about this year’s Golden Globes that is more predictable than seeing “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story” winning Limited Series / TV Movie, it is the idea of Donald Trump choosing to fire back at Meryl Streep over some of her comments during the show. The moment that she said what she did, you knew it was going to happen … and produce a reaction is precisely what it did.
In a series of posts on Twitter earlier this morning (precisely his favorite time for tweeting), the President-elect tore into Streep and continued to try to deny that he mocked a disabled reporter, one of her biggest claims that she made during the speech.
“Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never “mocked” a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him “groveling” when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!”
Without getting too political, if Trump is imitating someone, isn’t that the same thing as mocking? Also, there is something known as the intentional fallacy that states that we often cannot judge based on intent when discussing rhetoric. If the perception was that he was mocking the reporter, it doesn’t matter so much what his intent was. It’s about how he came across.
Streep’s speech has been met with both praise and backlash from many people over the past 12 or so hours, but it’s fair to say that this is something that she expected. After all, the nature of being in America right now is that one large group of people is probably going to love you, while another group is probably going to hate you. The only thing you can do is stand for your convictions, and find the right time to have your voice heard.
