‘Call the Midwife’ season 6: Should Barbara, Tom get married?
Mrs. Carter: What’s coming next for a “Call the Midwife” couple?
While we entered the Christmas Special this week feeling rather hopeful for the future of the characters of Tom and Barbara, at the same time, there was no real evidence that they would be taking their relationship to the next level over the course of the 90-minute event. Luckily that did happen, but after a series of important events. The two got to assess where they were better in South Africa, and Trixie (who previously was with Tom) gave him some perspective. If he loved her, he needed her to know just how special she was. This meant not giving her the same engagement ring that Trixie was previously in possession of, but doing something that was specifically unique to her.
At the end of the episode, we then saw Tom propose to her using only a blade of grass. It was romantic, sweet, and it gave us quite a feeling of hope that there would be some other great things coming up for them in the future.
Will there be a wedding coming up now in season 6? We certainly have a reason to be hopeful for it, though at the same time we’re also extremely well-aware of the fact that there are no guarantees within the world of this show that relationships will last. Do they understand and love each other? Absolutely, and that is the foundation that they are arguably going to need if they are to make it all the way to the altar. To us, a wedding mostly comes down to finding the right time for it to happen, and also seeing if the characters can withstand the obstacles thrown in their way. We’re confident that these two will.
Unfortunately, tonight’s episode did not give us a sense as to when the show is going to be coming back to BBC One with new episodes. Our hope of course is that we will see it on the air in January, as that has been the tradition for a rather long time with the series.
