‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Chance the Rapper performs ‘Finish Line / Drown,’ ‘Sam Drugs’

SNL -snlWhen we first heard that Chance the Rapper was going to be the musical guest on this weekend’s new episode of “Saturday Night Live,” we had one reaction that: A smile. He’s one of those musical guests who seems to love being there and being a part of the show. It’s a little early to compare him to a Justin Timberlake, but we see a similar willingness for him to have fun while also performing some music.

Earlier in the episode tonight, we saw him working with cast member Kenan Thompson on a pretty funny sketch about Barack Obama’s final Christmas in office. For the performance, we saw somewhat of a medley that started off with “Finish Line / Drown,” one of most recent tracks. We’re not the biggest listener to his music, so we cannot tell you beyond some of the Christmas stuff how much of this was accurate or not. Either way, this was an all-encompassing, really entertaining performance from a really talented guy who just seems down to enjoy himself on the show.

Also, we get the feeling that Chance really loves live comedy and feeding off of the pleasant, positive energy from the crowd. Also, a great guest appearance from Noname in here, as well!

Second song – “Same Drugs” as the name of the song, and this showed a little bit more of what Chance can do beyond just rap. He’s got a solid singing voice, and he is one of those rappers who can play around with pace and bring in a big backing band to add another few layers to his performance. This was just about everything that we could possibly want from a performance from him on the show. Really outstanding, and it made us actually feel something — not bad given how cynical we can be.
