‘Saturday Night Live’ preview: Casey Affleck, Chance the Rapper do some Christmas Tree decorating

SNL -

There are many great things to come out of “Saturday Night Live” the past several years, but the relationship that the show seems to have formed with Chance the Rapper is pretty high on the list. He’s going to be appearing on the show for the second time this weekend, and it’s the Christmas episode, no less. This is not some gig that the show gives to just anyone.

Admittedly, we hadn’t really heard of Chance’s music much before that show, but it was probably some of the best in his genre that we’ve heard on that stage in a long time. Guy is mad talented.

One other thing that we’re starting to really appreciate about him, other than his love of the canceled FX show “The Comedians,” is that he’s willing to play around a bit in some of the “SNL” promos, as well. When was the last time that you saw a musical guest in a promo this early in the week? Usually, you’ll see them show in a promo come around Friday, and it’s typically one that was put together in the studio in a matter of minutes. This one’s outdoors, and he actually delivers the line of the promo to host Casey Affleck when it comes to the height of the ladder that he brought out to help decorate the tree. There’s no cast member in sight, and that’s also rare — but these guys anchor the sketch well on their own.

Side note: Anyone interested in watching a holiday road-trip movie starring Chance and Casey? Think of it as “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles 2,” and you can throw a Steve Martin cameo in there to make us even happier.

This marks the first time Affleck is hosting “SNL,” so we’re interested in seeing how he fares. Given that Ben Affleck’s been great on several occasions, we’re not altogether worried — if nothing else, he’s got someone in his corner offering him some pointers, and he probably did so even before heading to 30 Rock to start some of the rehearsals. We do wonder whether or not he’ll shave off that beard, given that many other bearded hosts in the past have before the start of the show.
