‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Maren Morris performs ‘My Church,’ ’80’s Mercedes’
Going into this weekend’s new episode of “Saturday Night Live,” the only song from Maren Morris we were familiar with was her hit “My Church” — but we didn’t actually think that she was going to be performing it on the show. Typically, artists choose to take advantage of the “SNL” venue in order to debut something new.
However, Morris is a little bit of a different artist from the standard “SNL” guest, mostly in that she represents a style of music that they don’t often have on the show. This may have been a chance for her to appeal to a different demographic than the one that typically listens to her music, and she therefore may have thought that this was a good chance to perform her strongest song for them. It’s a very good song — it’s a little deeper than you’d figure upon first listen, and there’s a certain comfort that she brings to the stage as a performer. It’s also got a hook that should appeal to nonc-country listeners.
Was it enough to convince some new fans to buy the song? Maybe she’ll get a few downloads — it’s the best she can hope for.
Check out the video of the performance below.
Second song – This song was “80’s Mercedes,” which continued her pattern to performing songs familiar to most of her base. This was her second single released a little bit earlier this year, but it combines a little bit of what you saw the first time in a catch melody and a nice pace that allowed her to move about the stage a little bit. More than anything, these two performances were fun, and they fit the tone of the show well: They didn’t try to change anything or make song glorious statement. This was “SNL” storytelling and escapism at its finest.
