What ‘Outlander’ season 3, ‘Black Sails’ will have in common

Claire -

Over the past couple of years, we have seen South Africa become more and more significant as a filming location for prestige series. Through the entirety of the series, “Black Sails” has used the region to produce fantastic pirate-themed drama; meanwhile, “Homeland” season 4 spent much of its time using the country as a replacement for the Middle East — think of this as a way for them to replicate the environments while avoiding dangerous territory.

Now, “Outlander” season 3 will be taking advantage of the country, as well — but in a way that is a little more similar to its fellow Starz series than a certain Showtime drama featuring Claire Danes. Some may have heard already that the show is pivoting over to South Africa for a time; star Caitriona Balfe confirms this further to GoldDerby, and offers up some more insight into what filming there will be like, and the feeling of newness that will go along with it:

“We will be filming in South Africa (which substitutes for Jamaica) next year, but we have not seen the scripts for that yet … The great thing about the show is that there’s so much that is new and it often feels like a completely different show. It keeps things really fresh for us and we’re constantly excited about what is coming around the corner. It’s a great place to be constantly rejuvenated by the newness of it all.”

Readers of the book Voyager are going to know already precisely why there is a need for the cast and crew to head beyond Scotland, and seeing how the show replicates many of these scenes — which are so different and distinct from everything else — should prove exciting. This marks the second straight year that the show ventured beyond its home base; for the second season, there was a substantial amount of time spent in Prague, which doubled as France for many of the exterior scenes there. The architecture there allowed for better opportunities to replicate the period than they were going to get in France itself.

The new season of “Outlander” show premiere on Starz in the spring, and this is one of many pieces we’ve posted over the past few days in what is becoming almost the month of “Outlander”-related news. If you head over here, you can see a story regarding the ratings ramifications that could come from a shift over to Sunday nights. (Photo: Starz.)
