‘Secrets and Lies’ season 3: Renewal hopes and where they stand
Tonight marks the end of the road for “Secrets and Lies” season 2 on ABC, and it could also be the case that it is the end of the road for the entire series as a whole. The ratings to date are not stellar, and that may be tied to one of the reasons why the network is ending the show tonight and leaving open the entire 2017 schedule for other possibilities. (To be fair, they really would have had to stretch a ten-episode second season to make it to the new year.)
We’ve reported this already in a couple of places, but the main thing impeding the series and its season 3 odds at the moment is simply the decline that the show experienced between season 1 and season 2. To date, it’s down on average 49% in the 18-49 demographic from season 1, and anytime that you lose that much momentum there are going to be some questions regarding whether or not you have a future on the network, unless you are a major hit that is getting the sort of ratings that can withstand such a fall. This speculation is just par the course.
Is there a reason for the drop? Absolutely, given that there was such a huge wait between the end of the first season and the start of the next. Unfortunately, executives think more in terms of the bottom line than they do with excuses, and they won’t care about a hiatus. It’s just a shame given that this is a quality show, and it deserved a great chance to tell a story with viewers watching every move this year. This was a show that actually was gaining momentum through much of season 1.
While there is a reason to be pessimistic about the show’s renewal odds at the moment, here’s a small degree of hope: It’s not officially canceled. ABC will have until May presumably to decide its fate, but it’s hard to imagine enough other shows performing so poorly that they give “Secrets and Lies” another shot after yet another long layoff. In the end, we suppose we’ll have to wait and see.
