Could ‘Call the Midwife’ end with season 9?

Patsy -Earlier this week, we certainly were met with one of the most-stunning renewal announcements we could possibly think of, mostly because of the fact that it was so MASSIVE: We’re getting a lot more of “Call the Midwife” on BBC One and PBS. How much so? Think an extra three seasons!

Just for the sake of giving some context, there are only two other scripted series we can think of offhand that have received a similar renewal: “The Big Bang Theory” over on CBS (which was renewed for seasons 8-10), and recently “Orange is the New Black” on Netflix. It’s the sort of order that is only given to shows that networks have the utmost of confidence in, given that it’s a huge commitment to throw out into the universe; if the show tanks, then you’re out a good bit of money.

Sometimes when we see a renewal like this, we wonder if it is meant to mark the end of the show; there have been cases in the past, as with “The Americans,” that we’ve seen this happen with two-season renewals. We don’t necessarily think that this is the case here, given that we’d like to see the show go on presumably for as long as humanly possible. We do think that it is in many ways possible that it could, given that the main thing that the show needs in order to do just that is a continuance of great scripts. We’ve already seen that it can have a rotating cast and that the story and the setting of Nonnatus House is more important than any one character.

With that said, we would like to see most of the same people stick around, given that they are the people we already love and care for and we’ve seen plenty of cast turnover as it is.

As we move further and further along within the next three seasons, one of the things that we’re certainly going to be monitoring is if the ratings stay consistent or at least close to it. If that happens, we could see the show going well into the double-digits.
