‘Girl Meets World’ season 3, episode 2 review: Lessons learned in high school
For the second episode of “Girl Meets World” season 3, we learned that high school, despite its hardships, does in fact have a softer side. Not only that, but there are a few people apparently willing to hand down some advice.
At the end of the first part of the premiere on Friday, Lucas and Zay effectively broke away from Riley, Maya, and the rest of their friends, thinking that the best way for them to seize control would be to give in to the allure of the football team. As it turns out, that didn’t quite work as they expected it to when the team seemed ready to beat them to a pulp. Lucas quickly realized that he had made a terrible mistake, but there wasn’t an obvious way to correct the mistake. Also, he was humiliated by the way that he had handled this.
What “Girl Meets High School: Part 2” did effectively was paint a different picture of the story from Lucas’ perspective, something that we don’t always get to see. Eventually, he did apologize to them, and after Riley and Maya got some advice from upperclassmen, they realized more than ever that they did not want to lose their friends.
Meanwhile, we also had a chance to see a deeper story with Ava as Auggie tried to distract her from her father leaving. While this was a story played out very innocently, it still touched on themes of friendship and caring in an interesting way.
If there is one fault with “Girl Meets High School” so far, it is the super-saccharine Disney Channel way in which high school is being presented. Maybe it’d be different on ABC, but this is not ABC. We just have to expect that the depiction isn’t always going to realistic. We also are going to have to get used to having more of the supporting characters than we’re used to. In the end, though, “Girl Meets High School” concluded with a meaningful story that had a couple of laughs, and that is precisely what we expect from this show after around two years on the air. Grade: B.
