‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 experiences Memorial Day Weekend ratings tumble

LogoAnytime that a show airs a new episode during Memorial Day Weekend, there is generally one thing that you really should expect: Some sort of decline in the ratings. Airing something on a Sunday during the holiday is effectively the same as airing something on a Saturday; so many people have the Monday off, they can go out and do other things beyond just watching TV.

This weekend can even impact a show that is as formidable as “Game of Thrones” over on HBO. The latest new episode entitled “Blood of My Blood” fell more than 15% in the 18-49 demographic this past Sunday, and scored in total a 3.3 rating. Meanwhile, it also fell close to 15% in total viewers, finishing with about 6.7 million.

Sure, it’s a bummer to see these ratings slide, but there are two major silver linings that you gotta remember here.

1. This is still a much better total than last year’s Memorial Day Weekend episode, which generated a 2.5 rating and also 5.4 million viewers. The show is up so far more than 6% in the demo and 8% in the 18-49 demographic as opposed to the fifth season. Not bad for a show with this long a life!

2. Also, remember that this is just one small measure in how HBO measures the success of this show. Live+same day numbers don’t necessarily include all of the internet streams, or other things such as DVR / On-Demand viewings. At the end of the season, we usually get from the network something regarding how many people were watching the show all season long, and it’s a pretty astounding number.
