‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5 reaction: Sean Maguire explains feelings on surprising departure
Anytime someone leaves a show, it’s always sad. This has to be especially true when it is a character you feel is endgame with someone else on the show. This happened at the end of this past episode of “Once Upon a Time,” as we saw the end of things for Sean Maguire and his character of Robin Hood. He had been such a fun part of the Regina’s new love story, and gave a character once thought to be hopeless great hope. Our sentiment is that she may be able to find that in herself and Henry, but it’s remarkably sad to lose him in this spot.
We’ve already posted his first outgoing message to fans about his exit; now, Maguire has told Entertainment Weekly just what he and his co-star Lana Parrilla felt about his character departing at this point:
“Obviously we have a great working partnership, and we loved working together. It’s sad. We’re aware that the fans of the show, at least a large portion of the fans of the show, are very emotionally invested in Robin and Regina, so we knew it was going to be tough on the fans. That’s something none of us like – making the fans sad – unless it’s to make them really happy again around the corner. I personally feel the responsibility to the fans; it’s something that I’ve always taken very seriously and tried to be dedicated to them. It’s tough on them. For me, as an actor, it means that I am free to take on a new project, which is exciting. If it’s anything like Once, it’ll be an amazing experience.”
One thing that we’ve seen through Sean’s exit press today is pure gratitude to everyone who watched him on the show, and also sadness given that he did not ask to be killed off the show, and was extremely sad to learn about it earlier this year. He’s unsure what the future holds or if he could turn back up, but for now, we’re not holding our breath. We learned a long time ago that it is better to have almost no expectation at all and then be pleasantly surprised down the road.
