Is ‘Saturday Night Live’ new tonight on NBC? The plans to honor Prince

SNL -Let’s start this “Saturday Night Live” article first and foremost with a quick reminder: There was never actually supposed to be a new episode airing on NBC tonight. There’s going to be a show coming up on May 7 featuring Brie Larson as the host, but we were meant to be in repeats leading up to that.

Now that we’ve said that, NBC has come up with a rather-unique way to ensure that the legendary Prince is honored this weekend. They are going to air a retrospective entitled “SNL: Goodnight Sweet Prince” at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, and it will include highlights from the singer / guitarist’s performances over the course of its tenure. His most-recent performance was back in 2014, and it was basically an epic eight-minute rock-out session featuring 3rdeyegirl.

While we’re excited to see the series honor Prince in some capacity, we are a little confused at present as to what the entire show will consist of since he doesn’t have enough musical performances to fill the whole timeslot. Maybe there will be tributes; we know that we’d be happy to see Fred Armisen make some sort of appearance in here.

Ultimately, we’re glad that the show is doing this. While he was not someone who frequented the show as much as a Paul Simon, his impact on pop-culture is completely undeniable. Also, the extra space that the repeat gave “SNL” probably aided them in the decision. Maybe if we had a new episode this weekend, we’d see instead something similar to what the show chose to do after David Bowie passed away earlier this year.
