‘The Walking Dead’ season 6, episode 14 reaction: Josh McDermitt on Eugene’s big bite

Eugene -

There are times when “The Walking Dead” does tend to drift fairly far from the source material; however, at the same exact time there have been some really iconic moments that we’ve had a chance to see play out over the past several episodes. First, you had Carl losing the eye; then, on Sunday night’s episode we had a shocking death via arrow mid-monologue (it happened to a different character in the comics), and then Eugene taking a bite out of a guy’s crotch. It was crazy, but at the same time worked to create enough of a diversion in order to give Abraham, Daryl, and Rosita the upper hand.

In the end, we think that this scene really showed more of why Eugene is useful to the group, but not because of the biting. In pretending to throw Abraham under the bus, the character really was able to show that there is a use for his level of dishonesty in this world; it’s disarming, and it convinces people to do things that they would not otherwise.

In speaking further about this entire sequence happening to Entertainment Weekly, Josh McDermitt had the following to say:

“It’s such an iconic moment from the comics, and I said, ‘That’s just going to be good TV.’ Fortunately, we got a great actor named Austin Amelio to play Dwight, and I don’t know if he knew when he took the job that I was going to biting his crotch, but hey, he rolled with it, and we had some fun. It was certainly a tense, high-stakes moment in the story, but we had a lot of fun with it on set. Norman Reedus got a hotdog truck the day we were going to do that, and I know Christian Serratos was a part of that, as well, and we were just kind of cracking jokes, and making light of a pretty intense situation as much as we could.”
