‘So You Think You Can Dance’ renewal still a possibility, but with new tweaks

Will “So You Think You Can Dance” continue for a 13th season on Fox? It seems like signs are pointing in that direction, but not necessarily with the same group of people and the same format that we’ve seen in the past.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour today, network heads Gary Newman and Dana Walden confirmed that they would like to have the show back, but there would be some “changes” to it … but not ones that would shift the entire basis of the show. Our hope is that this means the following things.

1. New theme – Did anyone out there actually like the whole Stage vs. Street thing? To us, it was more annoying than anything else to have things segmented off in such a way.

2. Different judges – This was a mess. Get rid of the whole panel other than Nigel Lythgoe; Paula Abdul was good with Simon Cowell but we’ve heard most of her critiques before, and Jason Derulo had almost nothing to say most of the season. Go back to Nigel, either Mary Murphy or Mia Michaels, and then a guest every week who brings a good perspective like a Neil Patrick Harris, a Jesse Tyler Ferguson, a Kristin Chenoweth, or a Wayne Brady.

3. More live shows – We’d be fun if you cut down on the middle round as much as humanly possible. What we care about are the auditions, and then also seeing how these people fare in the magic of live TV.

Hopefully, we’ll have a chance to hear about a renewal soon, since there are auditions that will need to be filmed!
