‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12 debate: What could Riggs’ history be with Owen’s sister?

Riggs -

Over the past several episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy,” we’ve come to know quite a bit about the character of Dr. Nathan Riggs … but still not nearly enough to satisfy us. What we know about him for now is that he worked overseas with April, he has a deep connection to Owen’s past, and even Owen’s mother still values him almost like he is a part of the family.

However, something happened between Owen’s sister and Riggs that causes him to have a deep layer of hate in his heart. What is it? At the time of the winter finale in November, not even the cast knew for sure. Let’s take it upon ourselves now to put on a detective cap, and start to figure out precisely what this could be.

1. Riggs took advantage of Owen’s sister – Maybe he used her to forward his own career, and did something to hurt her dearly that Owen’s mother does not even know about. He could have decided not to tell her out of fear of hurting her.

2. Riggs and Owen’s sister had a romantic relationship – Maybe he cheated on her, or maybe she died and he holds him responsible for something that happened. Even if he tried to save her, he could have made a mistake. (Look at Penny when it comes to what happened to Derek.)

3. Jealousy – Maybe this is more of a flaw on Owen’s part, where he sees Riggs in his head as a jerk who hurt his sister in some way, but the rest of the family seems to love him. Maybe Owen never felt the same amount of love on his end.

There are other possibilities, but the fact that Owen never mentioned his sister does make us feel like she is not around anymore, and this may have been something that hurt Riggs just as much as it hurt her brother. We imagine that we’ll find out precisely what happened when the show returned in February.

For now, let us know in the comments what some of your theories are!
