‘The Flash’ season 2, episode 8 review: Hawkman, Hawkgirl, and Oliver’s past come together

Legends -

We know that The CW has been thoroughly excited to bring forward their big crossover for “Arrow” and “The Flash.” In many ways, this is also a backdoor pilot for “Legends of Tomorrow,” at least in that some of the characters were involved.

throughout this episode, we spent a ton of time getting to know the legend that is Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Kendra Saunders was hunted down by a man in Vandal Savage who clearly wanted her destruction, and this forced Barry to take drastic measures, including storing her for the time being in Star City. This is where we got to see Oliver, Thea, and the rest of the characters face off against Savage. It went well at first, at least before they realized that he was immortal. Thanks, Malcolm Merlyn, for the information!

Vandal seems like he’ll be an awesome villain. He’s mysterious, ancient, strange, and powerful. He’s also destroyed Hawkman and his love Kendra countless times. After getting a download of everything from Carter Hall, she had to learn to embrace her destiny once and for all. Of course, she did.

While the majority of this plotline was irrelevant to what transpired with the main “Flash” story this season, it was at least fun. The B-story was more about Jay Garrick and Harrison Wells in Central City, where we learned about Dr. Wells’ plan to inject Barry with Velocity-6, an enhancer he and Caitlin created to help him defeat Zoom. After Harrison was shot, Jay had to become the guinea pig in order to save him. He did! However, he doesn’t want Barry anywhere near the stuff.

We figured we’d save probably the biggest surprise tonight for last: Oliver meeting his kind by surprise at Jitters. Somehow, there always seem to be big reveals here with this story! While he doesn’t know for sure the child is his, it’s not too hard to put two and two together when it comes to the timing of it all. Grade: B+.
