‘Supergirl’ secures full-season order from CBS (sort of)
Since “Supergirl” premiered a little later in the fall than some of the other shows on CBS, the network was a little more under-the-gun when it comes to the decision that they needed to make regarding its future.
Well, it is now fair to say that this decision is now set in stone. There will be 20 episodes of the Melissa Benoist superhero show, a move that is technically being labeled as a full-seaosn pickup even though it is technically a smaller order by two episodes than the one the majority of the other shows in primetime tend to receive. This move was a necessary one for CBS to make if they wanted to avoid bad press, given the hype that “Supergirl” had going into the season. CBS did not promote any of its shows more than this one!
The great news for the series is that it premiered above a 3.0 in the 18-49 demographic, which allowed it and “Blindspot” to be neck-and-neck for the #1 new premiere of the fall season, at least on broadcast TV. However, since that time the numbers have been more than cut in half, and critical reaction is divided. While the show has great action sequences and a nice message, it has to work on more subtle ways to convey said message and also needs to create more interesting dynamics for its supporting cast.
As for whether or not this pickup means that the show will now have that rumored crossover with “The Flash” (one we still think is unlikely), that remains to be seen.
