‘The Leftovers’ season 2, episode 9 video: Tom lives without fear

Leftovers -Remember Tom Garvey on “The Leftovers“? It’s been a while since we last saw him, but the brief sneak peek below from Sunday night’s new episode may be one of the best moments that we’ve seen to date from Chris Zylka on the show. There is a quiet intensity about him, and also a sense of comfort within his actions.

When we last saw him, Tom struggled with the notion of what his ability to take the pain away from others meant … or if it truly existed to begin with. He’s been on his own (remember that Laurie was looking for him in Jarden), and the scene with him meeting a woman and embracing her is powerful, exceptional stuff.

As for the scene between him and Meg, let’s just say that this is something a little different. Despite being a part of one of the season’s most-unnerving scenes earlier this fall, he still welcomes her into an embrace, and she then speaks! Specifically, she whispers “I can do this for real” to him while in the middle of a hug. Does she mean that she can actually take the pain away, or is this a reference to something else? We may never know, given how much this show chooses to live within a realm of ambiguity. We probably will never have all the answers, mostly because there are dozens of other things that we also don’t have all the answers for. This is just the way that this show works for the most part, and you have to be prepared for that.

One thing that we do hope for definitively is that the show returns for a second season. We recently wrote a piece all about the subject, so be sure to check that out today!
