‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 7 spoilers: Will Michael Trevino return?

During this past new episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” we had a return that was certainly a little bit of a surprise: Tyler Lockwood! Michael Trevino departed the series at the end of season 6, but it was never confirmed that he was done with the show. Tyler had simply escaped the world of Mystic Falls, but he could be very much involved in what is taking place three years from now in the flash-forward.

The good news for fans is this: We’re not done seeing Tyler on the show. Executive producer Caroline Dries confirms this and then some in a chat with TVLine:

“We wanted to remind the audience that Tyler’s still very much a part of [the show’s] universe … When you’re fortunate enough to leave Mystic Falls — and not because you died — we try to exploit and embrace that. Tyler got away, so to speak, and just seeing a little glimpse of him in the show told the audience, ‘Look, three years from now, the guy’s still alive. So there’s some hope.’”

Tyler seems to have found some success in his career, and there’s also one other valuable question worth asking: Is it possible that he and Caroline are engaged? We know that she is set to marry someone, and that this someone is not Stefan. (She clearly does not even want to see or talk with him again.) Out of the characters we already know, we have to list Tyler as the top candidate. It’s hard to take anyone else seriously after Enzo captured her and Klaus is busy in New Orleans.
