‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 9, episode 5 preview: Why is Sheldon fencing?

Big Bang -When we first saw the photo above for Monday night’s new episode of “The Big Bang Theory,” our initial gut reaction was that we were going to see some sort of bloodbath between Sheldon and Barry Kripke with one goal in mind: Amy. After all, there’s some promotional material out there for this episode already hinting that Jim Parsons’ character may become a little bit concerned over the idea of Barry wanting to ask her out.

Instead of Sheldon learning how to fence in order to engage with Barry in some sort of one-on-one duel, the promo below makes it seem almost like this is more born out of a desire for Sheldon and Leonard to just try something a little bit more athletic. There are many entertaining things that could come out of these guys learning how to battle, from their lack of coordination to their failure to understand some sport-specific phrases such as “touching.”

By the end of the episode, the hope here is that a fairly good laugh will be had by just about everyone, and that we’re going to figure out if Sheldon is really any good at this at all. For the time being, here’s our guess: He’s probably not going to be. Instead, we find it much more likely that we’re going to see him make a grand gesture to prove himself, only to fall on his face not too long after that. Setting himself up for a dramatic fall has been established more often than not as the Sheldon way.

We’re going to have some further news on this episode of “The Big Bang Theory” soon, so be on the lookout as the weekend progresses!
