‘Law & Order: SVU’ season 17, episode 5 preview: ‘Community Policing’ tackles sensitive topic
“Law & Order: SVU” continues to be a show that does not much fear when it comes to approaching difficult subjects, and with that in mind, can you really be shocked at what some of the story is next week? “Community Policing” is the title for the hour, and it looks as though we are going to see a case unfold that will feel inspired in many ways by Ferguson and the Black Lives Matter movement. This is an extremely tense, sensitive topic for the show, and there may be some compelling perspective to be found in how the show looks at it. After all, these are the stories of people working within the police department, and they may feel like the public is against them because of the actions of a few.
If you have not seen the synopsis for this episode just yet, you can take a look at it below:
“In the pursuit of an SVU rape suspect, detectives from another precinct shoot and kill an unarmed black man. As racial tensions rise in the city, Barba (Raúl Esparza) is tasked to indict three officers who claim they had no choice but to follow police procedure.”
This is a hard story to say a whole lot more about right now, since this is going to be all about context and how the writers choose to depict certain events. We definite applaud them for having the courage to take this subject matter on, and we hope that they do an adequate job of showing all sides.

You know exactly how they are going to treat the whole subject. The unarmed black will be portrayed as the “poor black victim” and law enforcement as the white racist pigs that murdered him but the
racist pigsdetectives will get away with it because the majority white grand jury will refuse to indict them leading riots, looting and arson. Fade to Black. Roll End Credits. They won’t do anything close to an “adequate job” of portraying both sides. They’ll simply go for the lowest common denominator (ie. the black victim narrative) in a sick, sad attempt to try and seem relevant. And of course, hopefully garner higher ratings. That is all.

Maybe this is just what we need right now. Because it didn’t seem to me like most people care about the people who die who are unarmed and mistakenly killed. To me it seemed like most people think it’s just some normal everyday occurrence. Maybe this will help more people understand what is happening and start to care, and do the right thing.

Nope. We don’t need anymore of this kind of nonsense. All it’s doing is stirring the racial pot to see what spills out. And as for changing minds? Isn’t going to happen. Not now or ever.

Actually yes, we do need it. People need to start seeing how the other side lives and get out from under the rocks they live in and into the real world. We don’t live in a utopia, we don’t live in a fairytale land. This is the real world with real problems. These are issues that need to be addressed, not brushed under the rug. How are you ever going to resolve something if you never talk about it or look for solutions?

No, we don’t. We don’t need any more of it. All it’s doing is stirring the racial pot to see what spills out. And they’re doing it by exploiting the lowest common denominator, the blacks as the eternal victims narrative. And we’ve all seen how counter productive that narrative is in attempting to get people to talk about the problems and find solutions. It’ just ends up in rioting, looting, arson and shootings. Nothing good has come of it nor will ever come of it.

I’d like to see them deal with the issue of male circumcision and the inactive movement

Will this be the episode that gets SVU a higher rating than at least Criminal Minds? A higher rating than EMPIRE(if it’s new) would be amazing, but I’m not betting on it happening. A higher rating than the Modern Family/Black-ish combo would be nice too. SVU cannot keep finishing 4th versus these other shows.
