‘Bones’ season 11 premiere reaction: David Boreanaz on surprising death
“Bones” just has an unfortunate habit at the moment of shocking deaths early on in its most-recent seasons. First, was last John Francis Daley as Sweets; now, we’ve lost Jared Booth after the events of the season 11 premiere. The character was killed, and not only that, but the death took place offscreen! We did not get a chance to even see Brendan Fehr as the character one last time.
The events with this death were an igniter to the events of the rest of the premiere, including Booth’s disappearance and the path that led to where we were at the end of the episode. This was a crazy, dramatic twist, and one that is clearly going to be a part of next week’s episode as well.
In case you were wondering how David Boreanaz himself describes this twist, and the decision that likely went into it happening, the actor said the following in a TVLine postmortem of the premiere:
“You have to able to adjust on the fly and do things that make sense for the story. I think it’s fine. You have to continuously change things up by killing characters. I don’t think anyone’s safe. My character’s not even safe on the show. One of the hardest things is to be able to make that change. So no, it was good. I didn’t mind.”
As for Fehr, we suppose the only way we get to see him again is in flashbacks, which is something that we consider personally to be somewhat sad. We enjoyed the character and having him around, even if it has been a while since Jared was in any way a significant part of the universe. At least this storyline does project a long game for these characters, and one that will get the show towards what can be described in some ways as a “new normal.”
