‘Doctor Who’ season 9, episode 2 preview: ‘The Witch’s Familiar’ features the Doctor facing temptation
“Doctor Who” kicked off season 9 on Saturday with “The Magician’s Apprentice,” a fast-paced premiere that revolved almost entirely around the journey of Clara and even to a certain extent Missy to find the Doctor. There was even a “Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” vibe at one point courtesy of the Doctor rocking out in front of what was, at least for the most part, a fairly medieval audience.
Two-part episodes are the name of the game in season 9, and that means that “The Magician’s Apprentice” is going to carry almost directly into “The Witch’s Familiar” on BBC One and BBC America next week. We’re going to see plenty of Daleks, and at the same time, we’re going to get a chance to see what happens when The Doctor faces one of the biggest temptations that he has ever seen to avoid his mission and his purpose.
In the event you have not seen the synopsis for this episode just yet, you can see it in full below:
“Trapped and alone in a terrifying Dalek city, the Doctor is at the heart of an evil Empire; no sonic, no TARDIS, nobody to help. With his greatest temptation before him, can the Doctor resist? And will there be mercy?”
At the end of Saturday’s episode, we saw the Daleks seemingly “exterminate” both Missy and Clara; we have a hard time imagining that either one of them is necessarily gone, but the struggle comes now in figuring out how to bring them back.
