‘Game of Thrones’ season 6: Michelle Fairley’s still getting asked about Stoneheart
What is dead may never die … especially when it comes to the character of Catelyn Stark on “Game of Thrones.”
Even though the character has been gone since the third season of the show, there is still a small contingent of fans (we feel like it gets smaller every week) who are still holding out hope that somehow, Michelle Fairley will come back to the show as Lady Stoneheart. She is an important part of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, and her omission has been one of the most notable departures from the show. We always have believed that there is a reason why the show didn’t go the route of including her, and that is because of plans that they have with other characters to tell a similar story. Hopefully, we’re going to get a sense of some of what that is on the upcoming sixth season, which is currently in production.
Just in case you wanted the latest denial from Fairly about her future on the show, she made it to Gulf News Television, stating clearly that she is not under contract with “Game of Thrones.” She did also summarize in part her arc on the series as follows:
“I think in retrospect [the show] needed somebody to go on an emotional journey … Catelyn goes through the loss of her husband, the loss of her children and eventually makes the decision to kill herself because she thinks that there’s nothing left to live for — and they thought, because of the final scenes in Othello, that I could maybe achieve that for them.”
Fairley did a brilliant job on the show, especially in the final season. Ultimately, that is really why we think that the character is so missed and beloved.
