‘Gotham’ season 2, episode 1 video: Barbara Kean makes a quick friend
At the end of season 1, we certainly was an evil side to Barbara Kean on “Gotham.” She killed her own parents, and then to go along with that, she went after Leslie Thompkins with a knife. If this wasn’t good motivation to have her locked up, what is?
This brings us to the first sneak peek that Fox has released for the upcoming September 21 premiere, it is one that shows that the character (played by Erin Richards) is already figuring out a thing or two when it comes to how to make life work for her behind bars. Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) tries to convince her to go and befriend a billionaire, if for no other reason than that she could use the extra protection behind bars. Not being one to really respond well to orders, Barbara then decides to befriend a random bald guy instead, flirting with him and asking for protection if anyone comes after her. He agrees.
While we could sit here and complain about how this Barbara couldn’t possibly be the same character we saw back during the show’s pilot, we’re really not that upset about it at this point. She’s much more interesting now that she’s insane, and she has to be so much more fun to play. While the character does exist in the comic books, this is one of the bigger departures that the show is making. They’ve given themselves so much flexibility to do interesting things with her, and having her become a villain is a nice touch.
“Gotham” is promoting season 2 as the “Rise of the Villains,” so hopefully we’ll get a chance to see what comes next from both her and a guy who could someday be the Joker.
