‘True Detective’ season 3: HBO stays silent one week after season 2 finale
It was at this time last week the media was coming up with around a thousand or so think-pieces to explain why they did not care for the second season of “True Detective.” What are they going to be doing with all of the extra free time tonight? That’s a good question, and one that there is unfortunately no clear answer to at the moment.
Sadly, there’s also no clear answer right now as to when HBO is going to renew the show. A week has passed since the finale, and while network programming head Michael Lombardo said at TCA that he would like to continue the show with creator Nic Pizzolatto, there has been virtual radio silence ever since. We know that the network waited for some time after season 1 to start talking about the future, but even then we had more conversation after the fact. Pizzolatto has not given an interview of any kind since the finale, and in a way we understand why. He doesn’t really owe anyone an explanation for a season, and most interviewers would probably just peg him with questions on things that they did not like.
If we were HBO and/or Pizzolatto, our thinking would be this: Wait a month or two for some of the season 2 talk to die down, then quietly announce work on what is coming up. The best thing that this show could do is distance itself from most expectations. This is where it started to run into trouble with this past season, since everyone build it up on a pedestal that was almost impossible to match.
We will have further news and announcements as we start to hear more, so stay tuned!
