‘America’s Got Talent’ review: Stevie Starr, Alex Boye, Siro-A close judge cuts round

AGTTonight, we finally bid farewell to the judge cut round of “America’s Got Talent,” which to us is a very good thing given that we are already in September, and there’s only so much time to wrap up this season. Piers Morgan came on as a guest judge, and he really did not have a whole lot of screen time throughout save for a few hard criticisms here and there and a golden buzzer. Tonight was mostly about the acts, and there were a handful who were very good … and one we see as a potential winning act of the whole competition.

The Gentlemen – We feel like some out there will like them, but for us they are just a slightly-above-average dance group that is not on the level of some of dance acts later. There are only a limited number of spots; do you want them to all go to the same person?

Derek Hughes – He’s not a terrible magic act by any means, but we’re also not entirely sure that he does anything that we find particularly stunning. We’ve seen so many of his tricks and stunts on the show before.

Duo Volta and Duo Vladimir – Similar acts in some ways, but both very strong here. We imagine that the judges would probably only put through one … and we’re going with Duo Volta for now? It’s touch, but that is our choice.

Alicia Michilli – One of the better singers that we’ve heard. Her cover was innovative and certainly different than anything we have seen before.

Aaron Smyth – A really good dancer. Hats off to the show getting a really good contemporary dancer in his vein. We’re not sure he can win the competition, but he’s extraordinary at what he does.

Siro-A – Piers Morgan’s golden buzzer act was really a no-brainer. This group is basically the epitome of every great dance / technology act that we’ve seen on the show over the years. They have good choreography, but they also have really great technology and music behind their act. Entertaining from start to finish.

Gary Vider – Very funny. We don’t actually hear an overload of jokes out there about comics being broke, so we found the material pretty original and overall, we laughed several times aft this performance from start to finish.

Alex Boye – He’s basically like watching a one-man party in the streets of New Orleans. He’s got a pretty good voice, and we think that the band is really fun. We actually didn’t get the “wedding band” comments at all.

Stevie Starr – Yes, he is somewhat gross as a performer, and we have also seen him on other international versions of the show. (Then again, the same goes for Siro-A.) We don’t care too much about that; more than anything, we really want him in the next round of the competition.

Results – Probably the worst group of results we’ve had. How do you snub Alex, and also Aaron? We liked Derek, but we’d sub out him and the Gentlemen for these two. The rest of the advancing acts (Stevie, Gary, Alicia, Duo Volta) were certainly expected.
