‘Fear the Walking Dead’ spoilers: Don’t expect an explanation on zombie virus

fear -Fear the Walking Dead” may be many things: It’s a prequel, it is a companion series, and it is described as a “family drama” in the world that just so happens to have zombies. What it is not is an original story explaining just how the zombie virus started in the first place.

Would it be a huge ratings boost if the show actually chose to explain some of that? Probably, but the odds of them doing it here are slim to none. This is Robert Kirkman’s baby first and foremost, and you have to think that if such a thing is ever explained, he may want to reveal it in his own comic series more so than on a show based on some of his ideas. (Kirkman is an executive producer on “Fear the Walking Dead,” and all of the characters here are original.)

As executive producer Dave Alpert said (per The Hollywood Reporter) at the show’s Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour panel Friday, there are specific reasons why this show is still worth checking out, even if you’re not getting an answer to the aforementioned and long-burning question:

“Robert’s goal was to examine elements of the show and the comic that he didn’t do before … The show in season six is different than what’s happening in season one and there were so many questions about what happened in season one that we thought it was a ripe area that wouldn’t tread on the mothership. We look at Fear as unique enough to stand on its own with characters you’d be invested in.”

As reported yesterday, the six-episode first season (premiering with a 90-minute episode August 23) is going to have its finale on October 4, with a “Talking Dead” aftershow following it hosted by Chris Hardwick. Therefore, this will get at least some of the proper “Walking Dead” treatment. Whether or not the ratings are a shell of the original remains to be seen.
