‘Game of Thrones’ season 6: One reason for the showrunners to smile

LogoGiven how many different interviews and soundbytes are out there at this point in regards to “Game of Thrones” over the years, it is always interesting to us whenever we actually get to hear some sort of new information on the series and its inner workings behind the scenes. This is what we have for you today, and it revolves at its core how showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss feel about actors reading the George R.R. Martin book series.

Obviously, there is some story material to be pulled from and mined from the books. They are the road map, after all, and they are the reason why this show exists. However, what we have also learned over the past few years is that the books may be somewhat misleading. It is impossible for the show to follow the same exact path at this point, given that the books expand so much into different worlds and different characters that the HBO series simply does not have enough time.

What we learned recent via actor Iain Glen (Ser Jorah) is that Benioff and Weiss are not really that particularly thrilled about actors reading ahead. Why? He explains via the Radio Times:

“The writers themselves, David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss], they didn’t particularly want actors coming to the scripts from the book, always suggesting what the book did and how it was different – I could see the glazed look in their eyes when that happened … They were quite happy for us to move forward and treat them as screenplays with no history, so that’s the reason why I only ever read the first novel.”

Given that there is no other Martin novel out there for those on the show to read, you have to imagine that at least for now, Benioff and Weiss must be rather thrilled to present the actors with their own story.
