Miss USA airs diversity segment during pageant, highlights immigrants amidst Donald Trump controversy
The 2015 Miss USA Pageant is doing things a little bit differently this year … even if it is in a somewhat-subtle way.
During the event airing on Reelz Channel tonight, there were a few moments where we had pretty thorough reminders of the diversity of the contestant pool, as well as the fact that many of the contenders for the crown come from immigrant families. Fundamentally, this is no different than any other pageant in the past, but it feels almost as though it has a much greater focus this year than we have seen from the pageant in past years. Ultimately, we understand why the show would want to change things up at least a little bit. This is the first time that the pageant has aired since Donald Trump started a firestorm of controversy over some of the comments that he made about Mexican immigrants.
We should not here that Trump is not present for the pageant, opting instead to remaining in Arizona campaigning using some of his recent platforms against immigration. For the sake of the pageant, this is probably a good thing. It reduces the distraction that will be present there, and they can focus on their own stories instead.
One other thing that is somewhat interesting about this is that while Trump seems to be thrilled about the pageant being on the air for the sake of the contestants, he has not said much about Reelz or its president, who has come out against some of his comments. The reason he decided to pick up the pageant was to honor the “tradition” of it all … but we also imagine the attention probably did not hurt in its own way.
